Images communicate meaning and emotion immediately and directly to the viewer, be it the essence of an individual, the mood of a setting or the desirability of a product. They do indeed seem to speak a thousand words and it is also said that it is wise to choose one's words carefully...
The first step in selecting in images then is to determine what it is you want to communicate and then to source the imagery to go with the message.
ready-made
Originating images do not necessarily require the use of a photographer; beautiful and striking images are available ready-made. There are an abundance of high-quality, affordable images available from ever-exapnding online stock photo libraries. These images are of a very high standard and is often suitable as is or after some creative modification. Stock libraries are therefore a good alternative to booking a photographer where this is not absolutely necessary.

There are however many occasions where a photographer is necessary to capture a new or original subject; like people or products for instance. In these cases it is often best to use the services of professional photographers.
Digital photography has done much to put the shutter button within everyone's reach, but the difference in quality and style between an enthusiast and a professional is still unmistakable. To make the best possible impression, ask a pro; avoid cheap DIY photography.
Perhaps you already have some images, but they don't quite meet your expectations. It may be images from a shoot that aren't quite right or they may be damaged or old and worn.

Retouching can turn your images into visual dynamite: giving them the snap and polish of a masterpiece, suitable for the glossiest of ad campaigns or up-market magazine covers. In the hands of a skilled retouching artist, a photograph can be improved dramatically; even if it is already very good to begin with: colours can be tweaked and tuned, details accentuated, shadows and highlights dramatically contrasted and elements added or removed.
Similarly, restoration can reanimate worn-out or damaged photographs in the treasured family album or where a re-shoot isn't possible.
On a final note, photo-realistic 3D3 modeling and rendering can give you a “photograph” of whatever you can imagine.
